What are Dental Implants?
Implants are synthetic biocompatible structures that are used to replace the root of a tooth that has been removed. Implants are anchored to the jawbone and act as a foundation for an artificial tooth, permanent bridge, or denture.
Why Dental Implants?
Dental implants can improve quality of life in many ways. People who have felt embarrassed and worried because of their tooth problems are often surprised by how much new permanent teeth can help them regain confidence and improve their self-esteem.
Dental Implants Offer the Following Benefits:
- Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth.
- An implant is permanent, stable and comfortable.
- When placed soon after a tooth is removed, implants will prevent shrinkage of the jaw bone and help you maintain a more youthful appearance.
- You can eat foods such as steak and apples without worry.
- You can smile and speak with confidence.
Are You a Candidate for Implants?
Most people, regardless of their age, are candidates for dental implants. If you are missing one or more teeth due to disease, decay or injury you are probably a candidate for dental implants as one of the more effective cosmetic dental treatments. Implants are especially practical for patients who can no longer wear removable dentures. Dr. Sklar can determine if you are a candidate for dental implants after consultation and an evaluation of your dental and medical history.
Are There Different Types of Dental Implants?
Yes, there are several different sizes and brands of dental implants. Dental implants are very versatile, with different types of dental implants available for particular teeth replacement needs. Dr. Sklar will review your individual condition and suggest the most appropriate dental implant procedure, all performed in our Alexandria, Virginia dental office.
How Long Will Implant Dentistry Take?
The number of visits and length of treatment time can vary depending on your individual procedure, and current oral health, including your bone density. Total treatment time for implant cases can be as little as 10-12 weeks and as much as 5 and 8 months. Once a detailed evaluation and treatment plan have been completed, the actual implant process can begin. There are 4 phases in the implant process.
Phase 1 is the actual placement of the implants. This procedure is generally done in our office during one visit. Even if a tooth has to be extracted before being replaced, the implant is usually placed the same day as the extraction, if possible. In some cases, however, when this is not recommended, the doctor will wait three months for the bone to heal before placing the implant.
Most implants will remain covered, underneath the gums, for 1 to 3 months. During this time, osseointegration --the biological bonding of the jawbone to the implant--occurs.
Phase 2 takes place 1-3 months after the implant has been placed. This phase involves the attachment of a healing cap that will help the gum form the proper anatomy to accept the crown. The healing cap is left on for 3-4 weeks.
Phase 3 is the removal of the healing cap and placement of an abutment. The abutment is the piece that sticks out of the gum and will ultimately attach the crown to the implant. At the same time, an impression is made in order to fabricate the crown, bridge or denture.
Phase 4 is the attachment of the final restoration (crown, bridge or denture). This phase can involve one or a series of appointments to ensure that the size, shape, color and fit of your new teeth are just right.
